Essential Oil Roller DIY: Save Oil with a 3-Step Process
Behind the making of the newest products in my shop!

I have long-time been a fan of essential oils. My friend and coworker on Maui would diffuse essential oils in the office (she was a dōTERRA distributor) and it became a work necessity. Lavender would be my favorite study buddy while I was in Arizona for college, and I used some in a holistic skin cream I made a few years ago.
I first created an essential oil rollerball recipe a few years back at a brunch event I went to! They had a bar that was set up, as well as a mixing guide. At the time, I was having stomach issues – and anxiety – that would be calmed by rolling on essential oils.
I was recently shopping and came across the cutest roller balls with crystals in them! It seemed like God was pushing me to be creative in this space, and so I’m excited to share these new products.

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Why do we love an essential oil roller bottle?
Essential oil roller bottle recipes really help you to get the most out of your essential oils. Because you can safely apply essential oils topically in a roller bottle, you can get oils where you need them the most – on your temples, tummy, neck, or shoulders, for example – more easily. Essential oil rollers make things convenient, as it premixes the carrier oil and essential oils and reduces waste. 🙂

Ingredients for Essential Oil Roller:
Essential Oils
Essential oils are so amazing and I wanted to experiment with Frankincense & Myrrh, which along with gold were given as gifts to Jesus upon His birth. In the Bible, frankincense was used as perfume or incense and myrrh was used as an anointing or embalming oil. I also feature some supporting notes from other classic essential oils I love like eucalyptus, mint, and lavender. I won’t be sharing my recipes, but you can purchase my special blends in my shop 🙂 You can also request a custom order!
Roller Balls
I was so excited to come across these crystal roller balls while I was shopping on the North Shore of Oʻahu. I also picked up more in Kailua. I especially love these because the actual roller is made from the featured crystal. The lady at the crystal shop recommended that I match the usages of the crystals and the oils… an idea I just had to run with!
You can also use basic rollers if you just want to keep it low-key.
Carrier Oil
In any case, making an essential oil roller bottle begins with choosing a carrier oil to dilute the essential oils and reduce skin sensitivity. After doing some research, it seemed to me that fractionated coconut oil (FCO) would be the best option. I went to pick this up at my local health foods store, Down to Earth, which has expanded its essential oil offerings. The sales lady pointed me to some misters that I snagged, so that will be my next project 🤩
Why do you need carrier oil?
Due to their high concentration, essential oils need to be properly diluted before being applied to the skin in most cases. Carrier oils are the easiest way to dilute essential oils so this can be done! They help spread or carry the concentration of an essential oil across the skin without changing its therapeutic properties.
Additionally, natural and plant-based carrier oils can add a significant positive impact to the health and condition of your skin, in addition to enhancing the benefits of essentials oils. The best carrier oils are packed with antioxidants and vitamins, and help blend essential oils.
Pipettes
You will need to use pipettes, or a funnel, to fill your bottle with the oils.
Essential Oil Dilution Based on 10 mL Bottle:
Based on the purpose of the essential oil roller, you can determine its desired solvency. Here is a guide for how much oil to use in your mixtures:
- 1 Drop = 0.5% – recommended for infants
- 2 Drops = 1% – recommended for pregnancy, children, and sensitive skin
- 4 Drops = 2% – recommended for common daily use
- 10 Drops = 5% – recommended for non sensitive, short term use
Directions for Making Essential Oil Roller Balls:
- Remove the rollerball and add each drop of essential oil first. (See our recipes below)
- Using a pipette, designed for small bottles like your rollers, fill with your carrier oil.
- Carefully press the roller ball onto the bottle until it clicks. Then, shake the bottle to thoroughly blend the essential oils into the carrier before applying.
Crystal-Infused Essential Oil Roller Blends:
In order to create my crystal-inflused essential oil roller blends, I looked into the different characteristics of the crystals and of the oils.
Crystals
Tiger’s Eye brings focus and stability, enabling one to make decisions from a place of reason rather than emotion. It stimulates hope and confidence for the future.
Rose Quartz is the stone of beauty and love. It promotes compassion, appreciation, and soothing calm.
Lapis Lazuli is known as the stone of truth and integrity and is thought to enhance wisdom, inner vision, and mental clarity. It also helps to overcome depression, enhance feelings of serenity and self-acceptance, and brings success in relationships and cheer to the user.
Amethyst helps you feel soberer, less scattered, more focused, and in control of your faculties. It enhances the assimilation of new ideas and connects cause with effect.
Clear Quartz acts as a deep soul cleanser. It focuses on clearing inner negativity and stimulates positive thoughts and feelings in its place. It teaches one to live, laugh, and love with all of humanity.
Black Tourmaline is a powerful grounding stone, electric in nature, providing connection between Earth and the human spirit. Its supportive energy aligns energy centers of the body and channels healing light throughout the system. The black tourmaline crystal is also one of the most powerful minerals for absorbing the electromagnetic radiation that come from phones and electronics.
Essential Oils
Frankincense, renowned as one of the most prized and precious essential oils, has extraordinary health benefits. In addition to its notoriety in the New Testament, the Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for soothing skin. Centuries of knowledge contribute to the modern uses of Frankincense, with its soothing and beautifying properties rejuvenating skin and helping to reduce the appearance of imperfections when applied topically.
Myrrh has been valued for its versatility and effectiveness across many cultures for centuries. With countless applications, myrrh was used anciently for everything from medicine to religious purposes. Today, the resin extracted from the myrrh tree is transformed into an herbaceous, woody essential oil that captures all of the resin’s effectiveness. Whether you want to promote smooth, youthful-looking skin, promote emotional balance, or cleanse the body, Myrrh oil is a useful solution.
